Resonac Pride Products and Services

Contributing to Society and Customers by Fulfilling Our Purpose through Resonac Pride Products and Services

Resonac Pride Products and Services are initiatives to demonstrate our Purpose and Values through our business.

In order to achieve our Purpose “Change society through the power of chemistry,” it is important to visualize how much value our products and services, which we provide in a wide range of areas from upstream to downstream in the value chain, have provided to customers and society. These initiatives are positioned as a KPI and efforts are being made to achieve the material issue “Strengthen co-creativity & competitiveness and create social value through innovation and business.”

Points of screening(as of June 30, 2024)

In terms of certification, we aim to integrate the points of view of third parties in evaluation from the perspectives of value provided to customers and society by changing society based on our Purpose as well as the appropriateness of Resonac’s four Values, risk assessment such as product environmental assessment and reputation, future potential and impact such as sales plans and market share, and relevance to shared global goals (SDGs).

Main items of confirmation for certification Points of certification
Implementation of Purpose and Values What is the value provided to customers and society? (quantified as much as possible) Appropriateness
What kind of Values are demonstrated?
Risk assessment What kind of risks are there when evaluated from various perspectives such as product environmental assessment and reputation? Risk perspectives from third party points of view
Sales plans Sales plans and market share Future potential and impact
Relevance to SDGs How does it contribute to the 17 goals and 169 targets, and is it related to the essence of the SDGs? Relevance to shared global goals (including future potential)

Steps of screening

Until 2023, product and service certification was carried out in-house, but from 2024, we included third party participation such as government bodies, business partners, investors and experts, customers, and next-generation members to increase objectivity and transparency.

STEP1 Application for certification by business units
STEP2 Initial screening conducted by the secretariat
STEP3 Comments from witnesses and advisors
STEP4 Internal screening
STEP5 Certification as Resonac Pride Products and Services

The first certified Resonac Pride Products and Services:Kawasaki Plastic Chemical Recycling Business (KPR)

Kawasaki Plastic Chemical Recycling Business (KPR) was certified as the first Resonac Pride Products and Services.KPR is a gasification chemical recycling plant that started operation in 2003, and it gasifies used plastics at high temperatures and breaks them down to the molecular level to extract hydrogen and CO2

Points of certification (excerpt)

  • Since it does not use fossil fuels or fossil-fuel-derived energy even in the manufacturing process, the GHG emissions is approximately 80% less compared to conventional ammonia production methods
  • Recycles about 60,000 tons of used plastic per year (equivalent to about 20% of Japan's chemical recycling)

Contribution to the SDGs through businesses

As a Co-creative Chemical Company that seeks to create a recyclingoriented society, we have made contributing to SDGs 12 and 17 the focus of our corporate activities, and positioned goals that we contribute to through businesses and products as well as goals that we contribute to through our business foundation as shown on the right. In addition to the areas we are already working on, we are looking ahead with the aim to contributing to the creation of a future that we seek to realize through the power of chemistry.

SDGs Contribution Products/Services

*Products and services certified under the old selection process ("SDGs Contribution Products") are being re-certified under the new selection process.

Products/services Point Challenge toward 2030 Main target
Plastic chemical recycling
  • Raise chemical recycling rate of plastic resources: Raise Japan’s chemical recycling rate from the current 3% to 17%
  • Reduce ocean plastic pollution
  • Address types of plastics that are hard to recycle to improve the recycling rate
  • Provide stable production process technologies developed through years of commercial operations to operators inside and outside of Japan
9.4、12.5
Graphite electrode
  • Reduce CO2 emissions related to steel production
  • Build a sustainable, recycling-oriented society: Raise the world’s electric furnace-made steel rate from the current 30% to 35%
  • Upgrade electric furnace operation processes to reduce CO2 emissions related to steel production
  • Ensure stable supply of high-quality graphite electrodes from six: carbon neutral plants across the world
  • Aim to go beyond carbon neutral and become carbon negative at Omachi Plant (power consumption hydropower output)
  • Provide AI-enabled technical support to upgraded electric furnace operation processes to lower electrode consumption rate
9.4、12.2
High-purity gasses for semiconductor processing Promotion of sustainable industrialization Further increase the purity of the gases to help expand the data storage capacity of semiconductor memory for higher energy efficiency, thereby contributing to the spread of tablet terminals 9.4
Hard disk media Promotion of sustainable industrialization Expand the data storage capacity of hard disk drives to contribute to the spread use of data infrastructure 4.3、9.4
VGCF: conductive additive for cathode/anode of LIB Increase energy efficiency (with regard to materials used in lithium-ion batteries) Contribute to higher performance for greater energy efficiency by making combined use of internally available battery materials 7.3、13.2
SPALF: aluminum laminated film Increase energy efficiency (with regard to materials used in lithium-ion batteries) Make combined use of the SPALF aluminum laminate film and heat exchanger technology to supply light and compact battery cooling systems, thereby contributing to the creation of a low-carbon society 7.3、13.2
Contract development and manufacturing organization for regenerative medical products Promote regenerative medicine to provide treatment for diseases, such as cancer and hereditary disorders, that are difficult to treat with conventional approaches As a partner of pharmaceutical companies, provide contract manufacturing services for regenerative medicine from production bases in Japan, the US and Europe, ensuring a high level of quality. In doing so, contribute to the promotion and development of regenerative medicine and work to support the health. 3.4、3.8
