Showa Denko Materials Co., Ltd.

Showa Denko Materials Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Hisashi Maruyama; hereinafter “Showa Denko Materials”) announces the filing of a lawsuit with the Beijing Intellectual Property Court against Beijing Kehua New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. (General Manager: Lu Xukui; hereinafter “SCIENCHEM”) for infringing on its patent on white epoxy molding compounds for LED packages in China. The subject patent refers to the technology for enhancing the electrical connection reliability of semiconductor devices and other components when molding white epoxy molding compounds for LED packages.

As a low-power consumption, long-lasting light source, LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are used across a wide range of fields, from liquid crystal display (LCD) backlights for computer monitors and televisions to illuminations and vehicle headlights. Utilizing its epoxy resin technology, Showa Denko Materials began manufacturing and selling white epoxy molding compounds used for reflector parts of LED packages in 2010, and currently holds the world’s top share (in value terms, based on Showa Denko Materials’ survey). In addition, Showa Denko Materials has continuously applied for patents on the new technology and other applications related to these white epoxy molding compounds in multiple countries and regions, resulting in the acquisition of more than 140 registered patents worldwide, including patents in China, Taiwan, South Korea, the United States, Europe, and Japan, as well as the development of a technologically multifaceted patent portfolio.

Showa Denko Materials’ analysis of “KH-W-8050,” the white epoxy molding compound for LED packages manufactured and sold by SCIENCHEM, affirms that the product may fall within the scope of Showa Denko Materials’ patent (hereinafter “the Patent”) granted in China on the technology for enhancing the electrical connection reliability of semiconductor devices and other components when molding white epoxy molding compounds for LED packages. It is therefore likely that SCIENCHEM’s manufacture, sale, and use of this product in China constitute an infringement of the Patent. Consequently, Showa Denko Materials has filed a patent infringement lawsuit in China seeking an injunction against SCIENCHEM’s manufacture and sale of KH-W-8050.

Showa Denko Materials will continue to promote healthy market growth through the appropriate exercise of its intellectual property rights and contribute to the development of a sustainable society as “the global top-level functional chemical manufacturer.”
